After reading the other reviews I decided to stop as I was passing through. Well worth the time! Great food and wonderful service. I will definitely stop again!

We always love eating at Little Mexico. The owner, Ana, just spoils her guests to death. You leave feeling full and special!

Little Mexico appeared on the square several years ago, and it's been fun watching it grow from a little mom and pop style mexican joint to a full fledged restaurant. Good prices, excellent food, and outstanding service await at Little Mexico.

When I visit MP this is a must-stop for me. My wife was born and raised cooking with her mother and grandmothers in Guadalajara, Mexico. My wife makes amazing food as a result. I typically won't eat hispanic food other than what my wife makes but Little Mexico is the sole exception. I was born and raised in MP and now live in downtown Chicago, I haven't found better Mexican/hispanic food in either Mount Pleasant, or in my travels around the city of Chicago and I've spent many years trying restaurants in the city. I usually spend a month a year in Zapopan, Mexico which is the Guadalajara metro area with my family there which is where you find the the real deal- no Tex-Mex, no pretenders. Of course there are some very unique things in GDL that I've never really seen replicated accurately or at all like carne en su jugo, but trying restaurants around that city, Little Mexico still stands tall in comparison there as well. I've spent months in Spain and France traveling through little towns trying their restaurants as well, if you want to keep something special and top shelf in MP I'd recommend patronizing this place. It would be a real loss if it ever closed. I can't honestly say that for many, if any other restaurants in MP at this time. I eat here probably 5 times a year, but this place is great every time I visit. Since I'm usually out of the area, I call to order gift certificates for my family in the area for birthday gifts. In regards to restaurants, this is the treasure of Mount Pleasant.

I have been to central Mexico 5 times. Love the food there in Querétaro, so like many others, I've predictably been disappointed with most Mexican restaurants in the U.S. That was true even when I lived in Austin, Texas. All this to say, I love Little Mexico in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Blown away to taste authentic Mexican food in rural, southeast Iowa. Haven't had a bad meal there in more than a dozen visits. 2 things make it 4 instead of 5 stars. The service is not great, sometimes not even good (not rude, just not pleasant; not attentive to refills). It's also a bit pricey for what many are used to paying for Mexican (but since it's 400% better than those places, I'm ok with paying 50% more.)

I was really disappointed in our experience at Little Mexico, especially after reading all of the excellent reviews. Maybe they were just having an "off" day. We came during lunch hour on a Friday; there were only a few other tables. The staff was not very friendly apart from the owner, Ana. Our table got three pollo locos, and the chicken was awful, very chewy. The rice was not seasoned, and the beans were watery. No one got refills because we weren't checked on after the food was brought, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. We all ended up eating about a quarter of the meal and leaving the rest.

Visited here twice lately. Satisfying meal, service was fine and we weren't neglected. Enjoyed the chips and dips, others at the table enjoyed the many hot sauce choices, the food filled us up. Would visit again when in town. Loved the tablecloth touch.

I've traveled the world for work and eaten in more places than I can remember. What a delightful, caring, authentic little gem of an eatery!

Ms T and I were looking for a hometown café on the square in Mt Pleasant while on our way through, returning to St Louis. I guess such a thing is in the past. We found Little Mexico and decided that would do just fine. This is a family run local Mexican restaurant. It is very nicely decorated and actually has cloths on the tables. They have a considerable menu including about everything you would expect to see in this kind of place. We really could not test the menu for just a light lunch. What we had was fine but there were some good sounding dishes advertised on the walls, forming part of the decorations. I had chorizo tacos. The chorizo was probably commercial and just OK. I have been spoiled by a few places that either make their own or have a local source. The tacos were served Mexican style with onion, cilantro and lime. Ms T had the Monday special which were soft ground beef tacos, served gringo style with lettuce and cheese. She liked them. The ground meat was lightly seasoned. It was not Old El Paso and it was not unseasoned ground beef. The beans and rice that accompanied them were also acceptable, straight ahead fare. I don't think anyone will be overwhelmed here, but there was no indication of problems or bad food. It really is a nice place and if I lived in Mt Pleasant, I would probably be here frequently, testing the menu. We will remember it for future road trips.

Smiply the best Mexican food I've found in Iowa. A must in Mt. P.

I'm going to add an update to my original review of Little Mexico. Our prior visits have been for lunch or weekday dinners. This was our first time there on a Friday/Saturday night. The restaurant was really crowded, and unfortunately understaffed. The quality of the food was significantly worse than what we had on prior visits, not even up to the quality of a bad TV dinner. The salad in my soft taco was still frozen, and the melted cheese on top was cold. It had either not been cooked long enough (probably) or had sit out too long. The refried beans were watered down with what tasted like bacon grease. I think you would be better served eating here at off peak hours and avoiding the place on weekends - assuming that something else hasn't happened to change the overall quality restaurant (I certainly hope not because our visits when it wasn't nearly as crowded were pretty good).

This place rocked. From the time we walked in and were greeted right away and had drinks in no time flat. Then out came the chips and salsa along with another bowl of cheese. The salsa was delicious and the cheese was equally as good. We proceeded to snarf up a few bowls of each. Very happy table. Then we ordered our dinners, I had enchiladas and they were the bomb tasty and yummy. We had a variety of everything as there were 6 of us. No one was complaining just enjoying some goof food. Nice place, friendly. This is the best in the area. I will return.

I'm a native Texan, and this is still one of the best Mexican restaurants I've been to. The chips are handmade and the salsa is great. The fajitas were so good to. We come here every time we are in town. Service is good and friendly.

This place used to be a lot better. Now it seems like the flavors and quality have gone downhill. The place is unique with the murals on the wall but it can feel really cramped really quickly. Whenever I come in with my boyfriend, it seems like they sit us at the smallest table there and it is too cramped. The margaritas are expensive. A basic, boring margarita will set you back around $6. And it is nothing special. The food is OK, like I said, not too flavorfull. My main problem is the service. I've gone in to eat before and waited twenty minutes to order. And there were maybe two tables in the entire place. They are not friendly as a rule and often just take your order and drop you food off. Now that there is a competing Mexican restaurant in town, you'd think that they'd step their game up but that doesn't seem to be the case.

My first visit there was on a quiet Wed night and the quesadilla were good. Good salsa and chips and also a small bowl of queso which I have not ever gotten free with the chips. There were 3 taco sized quesadilla that were cheesy with moist chicken. I would order it again. I have walked by on Friday nights and the place is full.

What a wonderful little gem! The food was fresh, well-prepared, and served with a gentle smile. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and calm, like a mini-vacation. If you drive by on 218 without stopping, you have no one but yourself to blame for trying to save time, and missing out on this oasis. I hope that this restaurant continues to thrive, because we will be back.

Nice little Mexican place. I'm generally disappointed with Mexican food in IC so I like to try it in small towns, and I was well pleased with Little Mexico. Friendly service and good food. They even provide complimentary queso with your chips, which is really going above and beyond!

Hanging with my Dad one night in Iowa he suggested this restaurant. Given the only other Mexican place I've been to in Iowa is Carlos O'Kelly's (which sucks), I wasn't too optimistic. I had a burrito that was seasoned well and tasted 'fresh'. The margarita was respectable, but nothing to write home about. This place is really a big step above your average strip mall Mexican.

Today I spent a delightful lunch at Little Mexico. I had 2 meals and both were festively delicious. Everything is a delight there from their Horchata to the Spinach Empanada.

I was passing through MT. Pleasant. I stopped in here for dinner. The food and service were both better than I expected and reasonably priced. Served Chips salsa and queso to start. Great selection of hot sauces on the table. I don't have any complaints about this place.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
